Location: Mt Eden, Auckland

Project description:  Landscape design and construction.

The design focused on reflecting and symbolising Mt Eden in its natural form and creating a harmonious relationship between the structure of the house, pool area and the historic mountain. Volcanic rocks sourced from the pool excavation were retained and used to create large gabion rock walls at the front entrance. The raw materials used in this design are unique to the surrounding areas of Mt Eden and act as a natural anchor for the site. Floating concrete steps at the entrance of the house were underplanted with lush sub tropical species.

A simple but structural planting scheme consisting of mainly New Zealand natives such as Nikau and Flaxes complement and mirror the structural form of the house and sculptures. Mass planting of flaxes and grasses in deep green and purple encase the pool softening the edges and transition from the surrounding concrete walls.
